Performance, narrative, concept, lyric and animation are in my eyes the main types of music videos. The interesting thing is that in most cases a video will utilize one, two or all of these – the key is that they must all work cohesively with a larger idea.
PERFORMANCE TYPE:
A performance based video usually involves the artist performing and singing the lyrics. The videos usually use a variety of different locations and outfits which reflect the atmosphere of the song. Various camera angles, movements and shots are also used in performance based videos which also help to reflect the atmosphere of the song, as well as helping to establish the artists identity
NARRATIVE TYPE:
A narrative based video tells a story that typically follow the lyrics or relates to the lyrics. This engages the audience to the video as they continuously watch whats going to happen next. The video could be a illustration of the lyrics (the story follows the lyrics), an amplification of the lyrics (the story is based of certain lyrics, but could also show other themes) or a disjuncture where the narrative and the lyrics do not link. Here's an example
CONCEPT BASED:
A concept based video is usually based around one unique idea or concept, which typically doesn't have any relation to the lyrics the song. The unique concept is usually what helps to attract audience to the song. Concept based videos can be thematic(based on a theme) or symbolic(symbols throughout the video create a certain meaning).
