Pop is the genre I used to listen to the most probably the genre I know best as I used to watch a lot of pop music videos when I was younger. After further research on the principles of pop music video I learned more about the genre and considered choosing this genre when creating my own music video. Below is what I learned;
Camera - After watching about five pop music videos I realized that most of them use the same types of shooting. For example, many intimate artists are used to express love and to emphasize songs. For example in John Newman’s video ‘Love Me Again’ a lot of intimacy was used on his face. In addition many camera movements such as spinning and tracking are included in the pop music video. ‘Counting the Stars’ by One Republic most of the photos are taken on a hand-held camera which makes the audience feel confused as it is not crowded properly. However this can also create a personal and relaxed atmosphere for the audience that is fun to watch as there is no small stage. If the artist is a pop group shorts with wide angles are used to show the whole band is singing but equally they will have a close focus on it as well. Lastly some music videos are just rituals of movement and dance so they contain many long shots. A good example of this is Justin Bieber 'Love yourself'.
Mise En Scene - Most hot pop music videos featuring brightly colored costumes and healthy makeup. However when I looked at the costume I came across Laura Mulvey's theory which stated that women were seen as sex objects and wore glamorous and revealing clothes in their videos. For example Lady Gaga wears minimalist dresses in all of her most sexually explicit videos. With the advent of technology the environment has changed dramatically as you can now use the green screen to create a beautiful space. One video I use as an incentive when I record my own is the ‘Happy Little Pills’ by the tuber Troye Sivan as his background is very simple but effective. Lighting can vary depending on what attitude the artist is trying to create. Adele uses low key lighting in her music video ‘Hello’ to create strong shadows and emphasize an amazing attitude. Props are used to dress up the scene or as a symbol to represent something important, this can be a picture on the phone. In the 'Chandelier' video the props are very dull with all the attention being on the music and the dance movement.
Editing - This is a big part of any music video as it converts music and creates a finished product. Traditionally video editing is similar to music or rhythm. This can be done in many ways including cuts, jump cuts, melting and cutting. The layout also makes the lip sync look real by comparing it to quality music. Additionally, if the music video is in a narrative style it may include a voice that needs to be edited over the rest of the video. It also makes the artists look airbrush which is not bad at all!
Audio - Similar to my post about the codes and regulations of rock music videos especially the sound used in real music video. However some will have a small conversation to introduce the story and concept of the music video and what the artists are trying to convey to the audience. An example in Chris Brown's song ‘Wake Me Up’ has been narrated at the beginning of the presentation.
